It’s official: Matcha madness has hit our Australian shores and it’s here to stay.
Matcha lattes are popping up on menus at my local cafes, Instagram is filled with green smoothie bowls and matcha pancakes (yes,I am a significant contributor to this), and the other day I even saw a t-shirt described as ‘matcha green’ colour.
If you haven’t yet jumped on the matcha train, here are 6 reasons why you should!
1. Antioxidant powerhouse
Per gram, Matcha contains more antioxidants than any other food on the planet. It has 6 times more antioxidants than goji berries and 25 times more than acai berries. It really is the superfood among superfoods.
2. Oral health
Matcha’s high Catechin (notably the EGCG) content gives it antibacterial properties, which help prevent plaque build up and the formation of cavities, as well as to promote healthy gums. On top of this, matcha fights bad breath and doesn’t stain your teeth like coffee will. That’s a win.
3. Metabolism booster
Matcha contains a special type of Catechin called EGCG. It is known for its ability to boost metabolism and help with fat oxidisation. The concentration of EGCG in Matcha is an impressive 137x more than regular green tea.
4. Calm alertness
The L-theanine in Matcha stimulates the alpha wave activity in the brain, resulting in a state of calm alertness. It helps promote relaxation while heightening concentration and focus. It's no wonder Matcha has been used for centuries by Buddhist monks to aid them in their meditation practice.
5. Skin health
The Catechins in green tea help fight skin ageing process, reducing skin inflammation caused by UV radiation (thanks, Australia) and help clear the pores and keep skin feeling fresh.
6. It’s caffeinated
Lets face it, giving up coffee without a replacement is just not going to happen. The good news is, you don’t have to. A frothy cup of matcha contains around 35-40mg of caffeine, or roughly half that of a regular coffee. The L-theanine combines with the caffeine to slow down the absorption into the bloodstream, resulting in a sustained energy boost lasting 4 – 6 hours, and no cortisol production.
