Doctors and scientists have recommended green tea for its numerous health benefits for a number of years, and more recently, the famous Dr. Oz has recommended Matcha green tea powder as an essential dietary supplement. It is well-known that green tea, and matcha especially, are high in health-boosting antioxidants, but some recent studies have pointed to matcha's particular positive effect on Type 2 Diabetes.
Type 2 Diabetes is a very common disease in which the body cannot produce enough of the hormone insulin to regulate blood sugar. Over time, high levels of blood sugar can lead to organ damage and serious cell breakdown. Diabetics are often chained to a lifetime of blood-sugar lowering pills and sugar-free diets to avoid kidney failure and the possibility of blindness and amputations.
In a recent study conducted by the Institute of Natural Medicine at the University of Toyama in Japan, a team of scientists found that matcha had an overall positive effect on protecting against renal system damage by naturally lowering blood sugar, cholesterol and triglycerides, as well as advanced glycation end products, which are proteins that cause blood vessels to harden when exposed to sugar.
In another study conducted by Professor Takako Yokozawa of the Toyama University Comprehensive Chinese Medicine Research Institute, it was found that matcha had a better impact on lowering blood sugar than green tea because the healthy chemical compounds in matcha were aided by higher amounts of fibre. In short, both brewed green tea and matcha are good for lowering blood sugar, but because matcha is made from the actual ground up tea leaves, it contains a larger amount of dietary fibre which enhances the effectiveness of the healthy chemical compounds.
Both of these studies indicate that matcha is good for those suffering from Type 2 Diabetes and can assist them in keeping blood sugar levels within a healthy range, when used in conjunction with a healthy diet and medical supervision.
